This month, Joanne Melendez is the focus of our Employee Spotlight! Originally from Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, Joanne speaks Spanish with a native fluency. She recently graduated with her Juris Doctorate from Howard Law School; as this is her first job out of law school, we at Carey Law Office feel very lucky to have snagged her first! As our Case Manager/Law Clerk, she interacts with most of our clients on a daily basis.
We sat down with Joanne to ask her the real hard-hitting questions.
Carey Law Office (CLO): If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Joanne Melendez (JM): Definitely Japan. I would love to travel there and completely immerse myself in the culture – and the food! I love sushi – specifically salmon sashimi.
CLO: What are the best and worst things about your job?
JM: The best thing about my job has to be the people I work with. Everyone is wonderful; it really feels like working with family.
The worst part is when clients don’t use their portals! As the Case Manager, I’m the primary person handling everyone’s cases – when documents and communications are not sent through their portals, that makes things much more difficult.
CLO: What are your hobbies?
JM: I love to watch movies and TV (Cosmos is my favorite show right now), work out, play video games, and paint my nails.
CLO: What is your dream job?
JM: My dream job is to be a lobbyist for environmental and animal welfare laws. I love animals and I am very environmentally conscious, so it would be amazing to incorporate that into what I do for a living.
CLO: Name one of your heroes and describe why he/she inspires you.
JM: I’m going to name two. First, Sonia Sotomayor: she is the first Hispanic and the third female Supreme Court Justice. She overcame obstacles in her life to get where she is today, while acting as a civil rights champion – she’s also Puerto Rican! Second, Hillary Clinton: she is an extremely strong woman in a male-dominated field. She’s a fearless advocate and an empowering role model for women everywhere, encouraging others to stand up for themselves and be strong.
That concludes our interview! So, the next time you stop in our office, be sure to say hi to Joanne; she’s incredibly outgoing, friendly, and welcoming to everyone she speaks with. We wish her the best of luck in living her dream as an environmental and animal welfare lobbyist. For now however, we’re thrilled to have her on our team at Carey Law Office.
