Maryland Criminal Defense

A criminal charge on your record is serious.

There’s no doubt about it: a criminal conviction will hurt your record and your chances of getting (or keeping) a job. Your future is important; that’s why you need to retain a highly experienced firm as soon as possible. Whether you face a heavy fine or years behind bars, you need a criminal defense firm with the knowledge and expertise to confidently handle your case.

Theft

If you are charged with theft, it means you’ve been accused of taking someone’s property and intending to keep it without their consent.

The penalties for theft depend on how much the stolen property is worth and the level of violence involved. Theft under $100 (e.g., shoplifting) carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Theft over $100,000 (e.g., burglary or carjacking) carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

Assault

First degree assault

A first degree assault charge consists of intentionally causing (or attempting to cause) serious physical injury to someone. This includes any assault committed with a firearm.

First degree assault is a very serious crime carrying a very serious penalty. It can result in up to 25 years in jail – and as it is a felony, this conviction cannot be expunged from your record.

Second degree assault

A second degree assault charge consists of intentionally touching (or attempting to touch) someone in a harmful way without permanently injuring or killing that person.

Although second degree assault is a misdemeanor, it is still a serious charge that can result in up to 10 years in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Drug offenses

A drug charge involves the use, possession, or selling of illegal drugs. These drugs are known as controlled dangerous substances (CDS).

Drug conviction penalties vary greatly, depending on the drug, the amount, and your record. Maximum penalties range from one year in jail and a $1,000 fine for possession of marijuana to 4 years in jail and a $25,000 fine for possession of other drugs. However, if you are charged with selling or intending to sell drugs, the penalties can be much higher.
