This month, Nancy Carey is the focus of our Employee Spotlight! A Certified Paralegal, Nancy has accumulated a diverse range of legal experience in Prince George’s County by working in the County Police Department, the Board of Elections, the County Attorney’s Office, as well as two private law firms. As our paralegal and law firm administrator, Nancy keeps Carey Law Office running smoothly, handling a range of tasks: from general day-to-day business operations to running our marketing initiatives and training new employees.
We sat down with Nancy to ask the real hard-hitting questions.
Carey Law Office (CLO): What are the best and worst things about your job?
Nancy Carey (NC): The best thing is the way our MyCase system allows me to be in contact with clients and address their concerns without being tied to a telephone line. If a client has a question, I can answer it anywhere; even if I’m traveling or if it’s after closing time, I always have the ability to help others with whatever is going on.
The worst thing is how extremely difficult it can be to communicate with the court systems. There is so much technology available, but the courts just aren’t in tune with the way society works now. This makes things so inconvenient, like the way it takes forever to get a court date, and how we can’t email or e-file anything – it all has to be done by mail.
CLO: What are some of your hobbies?
NC: Anything involving being outdoors and in nature. I love playing with my two black labs, gardening, and outdoor sports like hiking, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. I also have to include my two guilty pleasure TV shows: Game of Thrones and Scandal.
CLO: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
NC: I’d want to go somewhere beautiful that has a completely different culture. There are so many places that come to mind. Budapest, Morocco, the Great Wall of China…I would love to go to Italy and learn how to cook real Italian food! There really isn’t just one particular place I’d say I want to see next, because I like variety – variety is the spice of life. However, Italy is definitely on my must-see list. I would love to go back there and stay there for an extended period of time to really see all of it and immerse myself in the culture.
CLO: If you did not work in the legal industry, what would your ideal career be?
NC: I would work as a landscape architect because I love the outdoors and making things beautiful. For me, plants and nature have a calming effect – the colors, textures, and smells of nature relax me. I love the warmth of the summer and the cold of the winter. I’d have an outdoor open house without walls if I could – as long as there were no bugs!
CLO: What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
NC: I need a skinny vanilla latte to start my day. It’s a little embarrassing because all of the baristas at my local Starbucks know my order right when I walk in!
That concludes our interview! We’re lucky we got a chance to catch up with Nancy, as she is an extremely busy person. As she gets ready to celebrate her 34th wedding anniversary with our attorney, Joseph Carey, Nancy makes up half of a power couple as she runs the business end of our office. With her job at Carey Law Office and her other full-time job managing a household and family, we’re not sure how she does it…but she balances both phenomenally.
My name is Joseph Carey, and I founded Carey Law Office 37 years ago. Since that day, the firm has helped people throughout the state get their lives back on track.
